A biography of the Artist, Dave Sturmer

Vietnam War veteran ex-Sapper David Sturmer was one of two sappers who were involved in the serious mine incident in Vietnam from which the popular song by the band Red Gum "I was only nineteen" emanated. He suffered multiple wounds but still managed to undertake his duties as a combat engineer and cleared safety lanes for the dead and wounded to be taken out of the mined area. He returned to duty after his hospitalisation. Several months later, David was again involved in another serious mine incident in which he was seriously wounded. This wound caused him to be evacuated back to Australia. As a form of self-treatment for the trauma caused by these incidents, David turned his hand to oil paintings. An outcome of that is his most recent work "Silent Guardians" - seen above. It is interesting to note that David includes his Army Regimental Number as a part of his signature. David was a National Serviceman. His military service made such an impact upon him that he still considers himself a Sapper of a war long gone.
